Description
Orphaned as a baby, Oliver Twist grows up in a cruel workhouse. When he is sold to work for an undertaker, Oliver decides to run away and seek his fortune in London. He soon finds himself drawn into the darker world of pickpocketing. With the help of some kind strangers, will Oliver be able to escape to a better life?
The story begins as Oliver Twist is born and immediately becomes an orphan, destined to grow up in the workhouse. Life is hard for Oliver. When he draws the short straw with the other boys and asks for more food, Oliver is taken from the workhouse to work as an apprentice undertaker. Unfortunately the undertaker's other apprentice takes exception to him, and goads Oliver into a fight. Oliver is locked in the basement and decides his only option is to run away to London. Children will discuss what conditions were like in Victorian workhouses and explore Oliver's character - suggesting words to describe him, and giving reasons for their choices.
